What does the research say about light therapy for aches and pains?

Accepted Answer

Research into red and near-infrared light for muscle and joint aches is still developing, and the results so far are mixed. Most studies have used medical lasers held on specific points rather than LED panels, so there is much less evidence for LED light, and we are not aware of any published research testing our panel on pain. We cannot promise that light therapy will ease your pain, and any effect may be temporary. We are always honest with you about what to expect.

When should I see a doctor first?

Please see your GP or a physiotherapist before booking if your pain has lasted more than a few weeks without being checked, is getting worse, is worse at night, is between your shoulder blades, follows a fall or injury, or comes with pins and needles, numbness, weakness, a lump or swelling, or weight loss you cannot explain, or if you have had cancer in the past. Ask for an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111 if the pain is severe and came on suddenly or is getting worse quickly, you feel hot, shivery or unwell, a joint is hot and swollen, or one leg is painful, swollen and warm. Call 999 or go to A&E if you have chest pain or difficulty breathing, very bad pain after a fall or accident, or cannot put weight on a leg, or if you have back pain with pain, tingling, numbness or weakness in both legs, loss of feeling around your genitals or bottom, or changes in your bladder, bowels or sexual function.

Can I have light therapy after surgery?

Accepted Answer

Yes, once your surgeon has agreed. Photobiomodulation has been researched for supporting recovery and wound healing after surgery, and it can sit alongside your post-operative care, including our post-operative care and lymphatic drainage massage. Please follow your surgeon's wound care advice at all times, and contact your surgeon straight away if a wound becomes red, hot, swollen, painful or starts to weep.

How many sessions will I need?

Accepted Answer

You can book single sessions or a course, usually twice a week. There is no agreed number of sessions for aches, so we review how you are getting on after six sessions. If you are not noticing a difference, we will tell you honestly and suggest other options, such as seeing your GP or a physiotherapist. If your pain gets worse at any point, please do not wait for the review. Contact your GP or NHS 111, and let us know.
