For the face and neck, a single treatment is usually recommended, and results build gradually over around 12 weeks. Body areas are different: in the manufacturer's studies, cellulite and the upper arms were treated twice, a few weeks apart. If you have the full face and neck treated, a maintenance treatment within 12 months is available at a reduced price, and we will recommend a plan for you at your consultation.
You will feel heat with each pulse, which some people find uncomfortable, particularly across the forehead and temples. Numbing cream is applied for about 20 minutes beforehand, the Sofcool system cools your skin throughout, and the energy can be adjusted as we go. Afterwards you may have some redness or slight swelling, which usually settles within a few hours, and most people carry on with their day. Less commonly, tenderness, bruising or changes in skin colour can occur, and we talk these through at your consultation.
The FDA, the US regulator for medical devices, has cleared Sofwave to improve facial lines and wrinkles, lift the eyebrow and lift lax tissue beneath the chin and on the neck, for adults aged 22 and over. Later clearances added the short-term improvement in the appearance of cellulite, the treatment of acne scars and improving the appearance of skin laxity on the upper arms. Other areas we treat, such as the stomach and knees, are not covered by these clearances. FDA clearance is not a UK approval. In Europe, Sofwave Medical announced a CE mark in November 2020 for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles.
The manufacturer states that Sofwave is suitable for all skin types, and the FDA clearance for the face and neck is for adults aged 22 and over. It should not be used over open wounds, severe or cystic acne, or a pacemaker or electronic implant in the treatment area. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, having given birth in the last three months, metal implants in the face, some medicines including isotretinoin in the past six months, and dermal filler in the area all need extra care, so we check everything carefully at your consultation.
